History of The Royal Family
In 1875 the constitutional role of the monarch was established in the Kingdom of Tonga. Tonga is the only sovereign indigenous monarchy in Oceania. The first monarch was George Tupou I.
Queen Salote's Coronation, 11th October 1918.
Standing at Her Majesty's side is her consort Prince Tungi.

The House of Tupou descended from three ancient Dynasties: Tu’i Tonga, Tu’i Ha’atakalaua and Tu’i Kanokupolu, and is a continuation of the Tu’i Kanokupolu Dynasty.

Ko e fasi 'o e tu'i 'o e 'Otu Tonga - English lyrics

Oh almighty God above
Thou art our lord and sure defense
As your people, we trust thee
And our Tonga thou dost love
Hear our prayer for thou unseen
We know that thou hath blessed our land
Grant our earnest supplication
God save Tupou, our king.

The lyrics of the anthem were written by Prince Uelingatoni Ngū Tupoumalohi, with music written by Karl Gustavus Schmitt.

The three swords represent the three dynasties or lines of the kings of Tonga, namely the Tuʻi Tonga, Tuʻi Haʻatakalaua and the current Tuʻi Kanokupolu). Tonga was united under King Siaosi Tupou I, who then orchestrated the formation of the first formal government and also the coat of arms. The dove with the olive branch symbolises the wish of God's peace to reign in Tonga forever (the dove and olive branch are taken from the story of Noah and the Great Flood in the Bible).

The three stars symbolise the main island groups of Tonga, which are Tongatapu, Vavaʻu and Haʻapai. The Crown symbolises the ruling monarchy, the King of Tonga. The text on the scroll at the bottom reads Ko e ʻOtua mo Tonga ko hoku Tofiʻa in the Tongan language: 'God and Tonga are my inheritance'.
